Discover Rio de Janeiro through the history and heritage of its Jewish community on this guided cultural tour. Learn about the presence of Jewish immigrants in Brazil and the important role they played in the city’s social, cultural, and economic development.
During the tour, you’ll visit significant Jewish sites, historic synagogues, and cultural landmarks while hearing stories about different waves of immigration, including Sephardic and Ashkenazi communities. Your guide will provide historical context and explain how Jewish traditions, institutions, and families became part of Rio de Janeiro’s diverse cultural identity.
This tour is ideal for travelers interested in Jewish history, immigration, religion, and cultural heritage, offering a deeper and more meaningful perspective on Rio de Janeiro beyond its traditional tourist attractions.
Jewish history in Brazil dates back more than 500 years. One of the earliest Jewish figures associated with the Portuguese arrival in Brazil was Gaspar da Gama, who accompanied Pedro Álvares Cabral on his voyage in 1500.
The tour begins with a visit to the historic União Israelita Shel Guemilut Hassadim Synagogue, founded by Sephardic Jews of Moroccan origin who settled in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century and sought to preserve their religious traditions and cultural heritage.
Next, visit Itzhak Rabin Park, which offers beautiful views over Botafogo Bay and Sugarloaf Mountain. The tour also includes the Holocaust Memorial, when open to visitors, where you can learn more about the history and memory of the Jewish community.
Along the way, you’ll see Chaim Weizmann Square and a public school named after Anne Frank before continuing to the Jewish Museum of Rio de Janeiro. Founded in 1977, the museum is dedicated to preserving Jewish memory and promoting Jewish culture through exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural activities.
The tour also includes the Grand Temple of Israel, one of the most important landmarks of Rio’s Jewish community. In Copacabana, you’ll see the Clube Israelita Brasileiro and the Beth El Synagogue from the outside.
